UP Gallery proudly presents Constant Bloom, the first exhibition in Asia of Lucas Foglia’s latest photographic series, which won a 2024 Guggenheim Fellowship for Photography. This highly anticipated body of work transforms the longest butterfly migration into a powerful metaphor for an interconnected world.

For millions of years, Painted Lady butterflies have migrated between Africa, the Middle East, and Europe in search of blooming wildflowers. As climate change alters when and where wildflowers bloom, these resilient butterflies increasingly rely on human-planted parks, farms, and gardens to survive. Constant Bloom weaves together the story of this delicate yet determined species with that of people, drawing poignant parallels between Painted Lady butterflies and refugees who follow similar routes in search of safety and sustenance. The series offers a message of hope and resilience in the face of environmental and geopolitical uncertainty.

Curator Willemijn van der Zwaan of Fotomuseum Den Haag describes Constant Bloom as a body of work that “initially seems straightforward—a documentation of butterfly migration—but soon reveals itself as a profound reflection on interconnectedness, displacement, and adaptation.”

UP Gallery is honored to introduce Constant Bloom to an Asian audience and invites you to experience this globally significant project firsthand. The exhibition opens as Asian Painted Lady butterflies arrive from across the Taiwan Strait.
