UP Gallery is pleased to present artist Wu Chia Yun’s solo exhibition, “on the way home,” at our 2F screening room. Since her duo exhibition with the gallery in 2019, where we showcased her photography and mixed media works: “Lonely Island,” we are excited to highlight another significant aspect of her artistic practice: her film works. Notable works such as “darkness within darkness” and the recent work “Five, Four, Three, Two” exemplify her talent, with the former exhibited at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and the latter being a finalist in the Taipei Arts Award in 2023, presented as a film installation at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum.
In this solo exhibition at UP Gallery, Wu brings together films that have rarely been shown together, featuring three fiction films: “The Farewell” (2013), “A Falling Dust” (2017), and “Portray a State” (2020). Over the past decade, Wu has consistently employed minimalist drama and dialogue to create narrative works. Initially focusing on cinematic language and mise-en-scène, she has recently honed her skills in scriptwriting and directing actors. Through these directorial practices, she seeks to establish her personal perspective and imprint within film aesthetics. Wu’s films often commemorate a person or an event, exploring the future within regret and questioning freedom and nihilism in tranquility. We sincerely invite you to view these films with us.
About 2F Screening Room @ UP Gallery
A new initiative commenced in 2024 through collaboration with LG, designed to accentuate the significance of moving images, videos, and film works. Over the course of the entire year, within an exclusive and intimate space located on the 2nd floor of the gallery, five distinct solo exhibitions featuring artists’ works will coincide with 1st-floor exhibitions focused on photography. The gallery aspires to broaden both temporal and spatial dimensions, providing our audiences with the opportunity to deeply engage with artistic practices that demand extended contemplation and more intimate settings.
*We extend our appreciation to LG for their sponsorship, enabling the impeccable presentation of works through The LG OLED evo 8K 88inch Prestige Series television.
