About UP Gallery
絕版影像館UP Gallery (est. 2009)
Solely dedicated to exhibiting photography and moving-image works
Founded in 2009, UP Gallery is Taiwan’s leading gallery dedicated to lens-based practices. Located in Hsinchu, the gallery spans three floors with a total area of 600 square meters, providing an immersive environment for experiencing photography and moving-image works. The gallery was among the first in Taiwan to introduce the concept of photographic editions and has continuously promoted photography as a medium with conceptual and contemporary significance. Its name, “UP,” reflects the gallery’s core ethos: uniqueness and progression. In recognition of its cultural contribution, UP Gallery has been designated by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture as one of the country’s “Top 100 Cultural Spaces.”
Since 2016, the gallery has expanded its international presence through participation in major fairs including Paris Photo, Photo London, PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai, and Tokyo Gendai. It has also collaborated with institutions on projects and exhibitions such as the Prix Pictet, Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Image Museum of Hsinchu City, Hsinchu City Art Gallery, and Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London.
In 2024, the gallery introduced a dedicated second-floor viewing room focused on moving-image works and film, conceived as a project space for focused solo presentations. This platform supports artists in developing more experimental presentations, expanding beyond traditional photographic formats.
While the history of photography in Asia remains fragmented and unevenly institutionalised, UP Gallery seeks to contribute to a more cohesive and critically engaged discourse by connecting regional practices with global narratives. The gallery focuses on artists working across photography and image-based media whose practices are shaped by transnational experience, exploring identity, displacement, and the construction of selfhood through visual culture.
By situating emerging and mid-career Asian artists within a broader international and intergenerational context, UP Gallery positions image-making as a critical lens through which to understand contemporary life. The gallery continues to act as a platform connecting artists with leading institutions, collectors, and museums worldwide, while contributing to the evolving discourse of image-based art in Asia.
