UP Gallery is thrilled to present a two-person exhibition featuring Chen Ronghui and Arthur Ou at this year’s fair (Booth A02). As Chen Ronghui’s key representing gallery since 2018—highlighted by his recent acquisition by M+ and a solo booth at last year’s Paris Photo Curiosa section—we are excited to showcase his latest series, Modern Shanghai. Commissioned for the 2023-24 NGV Triennial and recently exhibited at the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai.The work is inspired by Leo Ou-fan Lee’s book “Shanghai Modern”, which studies the modernity of Shanghai. Artist Chen Ronghui has been “urban roaming” in Shanghai for nearly ten years with a large- format camera , thus creating a visual portrait of New Shanghai – a modern mysterious city that mixes the past and the present, the East and the West.

Arthur Ou’s works, following his solo show Picture in a Picture at our gallery, reflect on 25 years of artistic practice, exploring humanity’s need to capture nature’s essence. His pieces create a “picture within a picture” by uniting four distinct series into a cohesive narrative, drawing parallels between photography and painting.
Both Yale MFA graduates, Chen and Ou’s works offer contrasting yet complementary perspectives on Eastern roots—Chen’s documentary style and Ou’s conceptual focus—providing a fresh view on Greater Chinese culture.
