UP Gallery is honored to present the launch of artist Mia Liu’s first art book, Present. On this occasion, we are delighted to debut the UP Gallery Limited Edition of Present, available exclusively at the book launch. In addition to the book itself, the limited edition includes a unique gelatin silver print created by the artist through photograms, signed on the reverse—a highly collectible work.
The event will be hosted by Hsiao Yu-Chih and will feature a conversation between artists Chien-Ying Tseng and Mia Liu. Their exchange, from the perspective of fellow creators, will spark deeper insights and bring out more layered and nuanced reflections from Liu. Selected works by the artist will also be on view in the discussion space, offering audiences the chance to experience the resonance between her artworks and the book, and the sparks of creative thought that emerge in dialogue.

-About Present-
Present brings together works from different stages of Mia Liu’s artistic journey, interwoven with profound conversations with eight inspiring individuals. Approaching her practice with openness and freedom, Liu reconsiders the notions of “painting” and “painterliness,” seeking abstract poetry within the everyday and expressing a philosophy of life rooted in the present.
Over more than a decade, Liu has encountered numerous kindred spirits—from intimate partners and close friends to brand directors, artists, art advisors, curators, sound artists, architects, and enthusiasts of traditional Chinese medicine. Whether through fleeting encounters or long-term exchanges, each has left a lasting impression on her life and work.
The book gathers these conversations, unfolding from various bodies of work without predetermined positions—sometimes emotional, sometimes personal, occasionally playful—interweaving Liu’s life experiences while shaping her creative core and unique worldview.
This dialogic approach echoes Liu’s long-standing exploration of “drawing” as a concept—pluralistic and free from traditional constraints. Present is not merely a collection of works, but a testament to the path of artistic exploration woven through these encounters across her career.
