About UP Gallery
絕版影像館UP Gallery (est. 2009)
Solely dedicated to exhibiting photography and moving-image works
Founded in 2009 by artist and photographer Yichia Liao, UP Gallery is the first gallery in Taiwan solely dedicated to lens-based practices. Situated in Hsinchu, the gallery encompasses 600 square meters across three floors, providing a distinctive and contemplative space for engaging with photography and moving-image works. Originally known as “Uniquephoto Gallery,” it was a pioneer in introducing the concept of photographic editions to Taiwan, and has remained committed to championing the artistic and conceptual value of photography. The gallery’s name—UP—reflects its core ethos: uniqueness and progression. In recognition of its cultural contribution, UP Gallery was recently designated by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture as an official cultural base.
Since 2016, the gallery has been under the direction of Agnes Liao, who holds an MA in Photography from Sotheby’s Institute of Art (London). She serves as the Asia-Pacific nominator for the Prix Pictet and is a contributing reviewer for the Mandarin edition of Photography and the Art Market. With a strong curatorial vision, Liao is dedicated to identifying and nurturing emerging image-based artists from Asia, positioning them within the broader context of contemporary art. Under her leadership, the gallery has steadily expanded its international footprint, with regular participation in leading art fairs including Paris Photo, Photo London, PhotoFairs Shanghai, Taipei Dangdai, and Tokyo Gendai.
Today, UP Gallery remains at the forefront of contemporary art photography in Asia, serving as a vital platform that bridges artists with leading institutions, collectors, and museums globally.
