Anastasia Samoylova

Known for:〈FloodZone〉〈Floridas〉

Anastasia Samoylova (b. 1984, Russia) is an American artist whose practice moves between observational photography and studio-based work. Relocating to Miami in 2016, she developed an immersive visual approach that examines how landscapes—natural and urban—are shaped by cultural narratives, political forces, and environmental change. Her acclaimed first monograph, FloodZone (Steidl, 2019), explores the visual language of climate vulnerability in flood-prone communities. This inquiry expanded with Floridas (Steidl, 2022), a kaleidoscopic portrait of the state’s layered identity, recently exhibited alongside Walker Evans at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2024–2025).

In Image Cities (Fundación MAPFRE/Hatje Cantz, 2023), Samoylova turned her lens to global metropolises, reflecting on the saturation of media imagery in shaping urban environments. Her upcoming project, Atlantic Coast—debuting at the Norton Museum of Art in Fall 2025 with a monograph from Aperture—retraces Berenice Abbott’s Route 1 series, questioning the myths of freedom, movement, and belonging embedded in the American landscape.

Samoylova’s work has been exhibited internationally, including the Saatchi Gallery, London; C/O Berlin; Fundación MAPFRE; George Eastman Museum; and Kunst Haus Wien. Her photographs are held in major collections such as The Museum of Modern Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Pérez Art Museum Miami, and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. Published monographs include FloodZone, Floridas, Image Cities, and Adaptation (Thames & Hudson, 2024).
