Present

Present brings together works from different stages of Mia Liu’s artistic journey, interwoven with profound conversations with eight inspiring individuals. Approaching her practice with openness and freedom, Liu reconsiders the notions of “painting” and “painterliness,” seeking abstract poetry within the everyday and expressing a philosophy of life rooted in the present.

Over more than a decade, Liu has encountered numerous kindred spirits—from intimate partners and close friends to brand directors, artists, art advisors, curators, sound artists, architects, and enthusiasts of traditional Chinese medicine. Whether through fleeting encounters or long-term exchanges, each has left a lasting impression on her life and work.

The book gathers these conversations, unfolding from various bodies of work without predetermined positions—sometimes emotional, sometimes personal, occasionally playful—interweaving Liu’s life experiences while shaping her creative core and unique worldview.

This dialogic approach echoes Liu’s long-standing exploration of “drawing” as a concept—pluralistic and free from traditional constraints. Present is not merely a collection of works, but a testament to the path of artistic exploration woven through these encounters across her career.

MORE

Mia Liu is a visual artist based in Taipei, where she lives and works.

Her artistic practice is devoted to discovering poetry within the everyday, exploring the subtle and mysterious connections between sensation, memory, nature, and culture, and materializing them through her finely attuned sensitivity to materials and technique. Her work not only presents a philosophical contemplation of the present moment but also delicately investigates the intricate relationship between the “past” and the “possible future” through a re-examination of art history.

While her works take on diverse forms and are not confined to any single medium, together they construct her distinctive “Drawing System.”
