Exhibition Introduction

Echoing the site of Jumièges Abbey, located near the Seine river, the exhibition“Flowing Waters Never Go Back to the Source” will focus on the Chinese river. As seen through the eyes of thirteen contemporary photographers, a seminal theme of the Chinese rivers will be observed.

From the lineage of traditional Chinese painting where idealized landscapes seem suspended in time to the accelerated modernization of the country and its consequences on nature and environment, visual narratives using its evocative power, the river has formed a recurring motif of inspiration for photographers. For the past twenty years, the river continually inspires the artists in China and all the photographers around the world.

Exhibited artists: Yang Yongliang, Sui Taca, Luo Dan, Michael Cherney, Edward Burtynsky, Zhuang Hui, Chen Qiulin, Mu Ge, Liu Ke, Jia Zhangke, Zhang Xiao, Chen Ronghui, Zhang Kechun.
