Glisten: Murphy Chen’s solo exhibition

Glisten: Murphy Chen’s solo exhibition

Opening Reception|2014.09.20 (Sat.) 14:30

Venue|UP Gallery

“Glisten” breaking away from past styles Murphy Chen uses realistic techniques to portray and record the abstract ripples (sprays).  Inheriting the topic of the previous exhibition “Sea” the artist further explores the relationship with nature. Through the waves that continuously wash the shore and the sun casting its light on the water, this creates “Glistens” on the surface of the water. The constant drifting and clashing of the waves construct a series of sprays in the water. It is a conversation between these movements. Sometimes close sometimes far way but when they meet they form radiant and unlimited possibilities waiting for people to discover.

Through the eyes of Murphy Chen, one will see the abstract images and may have the opportunity to reflect upon them. Pounder on the paths of the future, the chances of meeting someone, understanding someone, and leaving someone are all part of the experiences people share with each other in life. One can recall the endless curiosity deep down in our hearts to look for different aspects and time periods of our lives. Memories stay for eternity in our minds yet some are lost in the grey area, the area of unknown and known. Let us step out to the unknown and lose ourselves, open our arms and embrace in this wonderful world of “Glisten”.

About the Artist

Murphy Chen(b. 1971)

A contemporary art photographer who focuses on landscape and nature, rather than the documentary approach has positioned himself in the aesthetic field and explores the relationship with nature through subjectivity. Recognized as Taiwan’s first photographer to manipulate images through the XYZ axis his images appear as if they were created in one shot. Obsessed with resolution and detail he conjures astounding images of nature to generate the experience of the realistic confrontation with nature when audiences view his works. His emphasis on the process of physical hardship of reaching remote locations in nature with his vast and heavy photography equipment has provoked the contemplation of “advancement”, the ideology in Chen’s mind, is excelling as a person and as a photographer. The mentality was triggered by witnessing the power of nature either through climbing the highest peak, immersing in the sea, and observing the surface of the ocean. Taiwan’s nature is his current focus and its positive implications are what he hopes audiences can withdraw when they are exposed to his works. Known for works such as:  < Ocean Encounters 2012 >
