Summon Images Photobook

The title of this body of work,「喚相」in Mandarin has the double meaning of “summoning memories” and “exchange of images”.

It is an on-going project. Utilizing an autobiographical style, twenty-two important life events are presented as final images and produced digitally. Each theme in the images begins with analogue photographs. They range from when the artist was a month old (the first image that instills self-recognition), and extends to important figures: his classmates, coworkers, parents, wife and children; even to include inspirational objects, all recorded with analogue photography. These photographs are then incorporated into an image of moving water passing through stones: the stones embed memories, and water represents the passage of time, a continuous flow that trickles through the analogue photographs.

MORE

Yichia Liao designed the photobook to mimic the traditional photo albums he once kept and the paper bag which photo studios give when photographs were developed, is a replica of one he owned in the past. The assorted photographs all in their original sizes are for viewers to freely match them with his current works which are featured in the photobook. Some captions will appear on the back of the photograph and others in the book. The artist hopes the viewers can piece up the memory fragments through both analogue and digital photographs and then remember their own stories. Lastly, if any memory fragments resonate with the viewers they can write them down on the postcard provided and get in contact with the artist to join the artistic journey.
Yichia Liao (b. 1961) is an artist that practices photography and installation art. His artistic practice surrounds the relationship between time and the universe. Having a vigorous background in analogue photography and experiences in the darkroom he is highly influenced by modernist values. Yet he adopts issues and conveys his works in a conceptual and critical manner, resulting in an inevitable tension of conceptual and (extravagantly beautiful) subjectivity that coexists in his works which have become his signature style.
