UP Gallery is delighted to present “Time, Space & Infinity”, a solo exhibition by Alexandra Hunts. She will be present for the opening reception to give a brief artist talk on her works and artistic practice.
How do we perceive the unknown, more precisely quantify and understand it? The process and means of acquiring knowledge and the course of extracting these pieces of information is questionable and complex. The relationship between these processes and their role and effects on society is the inspiration for Hunts’ works. Space, a void that extends to interstellar or further out to the cosmos appears out of reach, yet its form and possibilities do not cease to fascinate humankind. Photography furnishes our imaginations and Hunts cleverly manipulates the understanding of the real to illustrate a parallel reality through Meteorites and Cosmic Proximity. Time, a substance so elusive to fathom takes the form of a clock. This clock is a mechanism we built that embody our lives and our consciousness transcends in a Time machine, a moving image work that ruptures our understanding of time. Lastly, Infinity, as a stem cell’s essence to perfectly reproduce is replicated through the action of photocopying. Gradient, an image of the result of artificial construction pounders the possibility of the existence of infinity in the world.
By dissecting materials to produce a form of visualization and through photographing to present a new understanding, the works scientific in production and concept reveals itself as an image that compels humans to ponder its meaning. Balancing between sculpture and photography Hunts seek to give intangible concepts a new meaning. Perhaps through precise measurements, various textures, and intricate processes, a certainty is unveiled and indeed an infinity and power amongst art is found.
About the Artist
Alexandra Hunts (b.1990 Ukraine)
Living and working in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Malmö, Sweden. Her work seeks to find an epistemic basis on which the world can be shaped and given an order. With each project, she tries to challenge the audience’s trust in the veracity of the photographic medium and its mechanisms as a system of representation. In exposing the various artifices of the medium she questions how and why photography acquires a seductive truthfulness in the eyes of its viewers. With a BA in photography at the Royal Academy of Art and an MFA in KHM Malmo Art Academy, she has received numerous awards such as ING New Talent Photography Award, Foam Talent, Rudin Prize, Somfy Photography Award, and much more. On the other hand, her works have been collected by institutions such as Nationale Nederlander, Norton Museum, LUMC, ING, and many private collectors.
